Android L: Do Not Disturb Mode (Developer Preview)

The “do not disturb” settings have been something that many of us have been craving to be included in the stock Android. Even though there were some manufacturers who tried to include that feature in their OEM android, it was kind of a hit and miss thing. The best alternative was to purchase an app that would do the perfect job for you. And even though our needs were fulfilled by these apps, there really is nothing that can beat a tightly integrated system “do not disturb” settings to allow us to connect back with the nature, or just have a sound sleep.

The inclusion of Do Not Disturb mode in the settings of Android L have been one of the lucky things that we have found lately, which lets you keep yourself away from the annoying notifications during night, or just for a specific time period to let you focus on something.

Enabling And Tweaking The Do Not Disturb Settings In Android L

You can set up the Do Not Disturb mode in three different ways in the current version of the Android L Developer Preview. And even though this might sound like a pretty confusing thing, I will say that all of them are dead simple. The first, or the primary way to do this, is by going in to Settings – Sounds and Notifications. That’s where you can find the Do Not Disturb mode at least for now before the release. Once you are inside the Do Not Disturb option, you can toggle the mode and tweak the settings from there.

The first option to tweak, is whether you want to hear the notifications from your calls and text messages. You can select whether you want to hear the notifications only from your starred contacts, or from everyone. There is also an option where you can choose to hear the notifications from a contact after a certain number of calls from them.

Next you have the option to specify a daily time when you do not want to be disturbed. Mostly this option is to set during night time, but you can set it at any time you want. At this point, you can just set this option which will be the same for all the days.

The other two ways for toggling the Do Not Disturb option, is by swiping down your notification panel, and then flipping over to see the quick settings. Once there, you’ll have the Notifications option with a bell icon. Tap it, and you will be taken to a new screen where you will have the option to play with your notifications volume, or enable the Do Not Disturb mode. When you tap on the Do Not Disturb icon, it will give you the option to either activate that mode for a limited time, such as 15 minutes or 8 hours or until when you turn that mode off.

The last way of doing this, is through the volume pop-up when you press the volume keys on your smartphone.
